What is Semaglutide and how does it work?

 Semaglutide mimics the hormone peptide-1 (GLP-1), which is responsible for enhancing insulin secretion and inhibiting glucagon release. In plain terms, Semaglutide increases feelings of fullness, helping the person taking this medication to feel less hungry. Peptide-1 works in the areas of the brain that regulate food intake and hunger, so taking a mimic of this hormone helps stave off feelings of hunger. Less hunger can equal less eating, and the resulting caloric deficit can result in successful weight loss.

Am I a candidate?

 Obese adults and overweight adults with weight-related medical conditions can be good candidates for Semaglutide. Patients must also be willing to change their diet and exercise habits for the best results. Research has shown success with Semaglutide among a wide range of obese and overweight people, regardless of age, ethnicity, and starting BMI.

Who is NOT a candidate?

 Though effective, Semaglutide is not for everyone. This medication isn’t appropriate for patients with type 1 diabetes. If you are allergic to Semaglutide, you are ineligible for Semaglutide. The same is true if you are allergic to any of the following: Albiglutide, Dulaglutide, Exanatide, Liraglutide, or Lixisenatide. Patients already taking a medication containing Semaglutide are ineligible for a Semaglutide prescription. Patients who have had (or who currently have) a history of endocrine tumors, vision problems, pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, kidney disease, thyroid cancer, gastrointestinal problems, or pregnant/breastfeeding are not eligible for this medication. Semaglutide can also lead to suicidal thoughts. It’s important that patients are frank with their physician about any history of suicidal ideation before taking this medication. Patients who are unwilling to alter their diet, or add regular physical activity, may not be eligible for Semaglutide for weight loss. Patients with a BMI less than 27 are not candidates.

How is Semaglutide administered?

Semaglutide is injected under the skin with an insulin syringe in the belly, behind the arm, or thigh once a week. You will be taught how to prepare and give it. It is given once every week (every 7 days). Keep taking it unless your provider tells you to discontinue the medication.

What should the patient expect during a Semaglutide consultation?

 During your consultation, your medical provider will thoroughly review your medical history to determine if you are a potential candidate for this medication. Next, your provider will take your height and weight and calculate your BMI in the office. A BMI of 27 (overweight) or above is required for the treatment of Semaglutide. Once this information is collected and you are determined to be a candidate for Semaglutide, your provider will order lab tests at your nearest LabCorp to be completed before your first medication dosage. Once your labs have been reviewed by the provider, you will be scheduled for a return visit to Euna for your initial medication visit.

What are the side effects of Semaglutide?

 Though rare, this medication can bring with it some unpleasant side effects. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue, dizziness, or constipation might occur. Nausea usually lessens as you continue to use Semaglutide. Serious side effects that require immediate medical attention include, but are not limited to, developing a rash, experiencing vision changes, lightheadedness or fainting, and the yellowing of skin or eyes while on this medication. It’s important for patients to speak to their provider about any adverse reactions encountered while taking this or any other medication.

Is Semaglutide covered by insurance?

 In most instances, Semaglutide is not covered by insurance plans.

How soon will I notice the results?

 Over the course of the program, eligible patients can expect to lose up to an average of 23% of body weight. The average patient loses 15-50 pounds in a year.

How much does it cost?

Semaglutide costs $450 for the first month including the consultation fee and the first month’s dosing. Each additional month after the initial month is $300/month covering medication and supplies.
